Burleigh County Declares Fire Emergency and Institutes Burn Ban

Posted on 10/1/2012

A Fire Emergency and Burn Ban are effective immediately and until further notice. The area is under abnormally dry conditions and has either sustained or been threatened with rural fires as of this date. The burn ban (including banning campfires and garbage burning) remains in effect when the North Dakota Rangeland Fire Danger Index is in the "Very High" or "Extreme" Index and/or a Red Flag Warning has been issued.

THE PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF THIS BURN BAN IS A CLASS B MISDEMEANOR (NDCC 37-17.1-10.1: MAXIMUM SENTENCE OF 30 DAYS IN JAIL AND $1,000 FINE).

ND Rangeland Fire Danger Statement

The ND Rural Fire Danger Guide lists the outdoor activity guidelines for the five danger indices (Low, Medium, High, Very High, and Extreme). Open burning and off-road motorized travel is prohibited when the Fire Index is in the Extreme Category.

The City of Bismarck has permanent burn restrictions in place through an adopted fire code and is excluded from the burn ban. The City of Bismarck allows fire pits if they abide by the City Ordinance.

If a citizen is ever in doubt of what they can and cannot do, they should contact their Emergency Manager or local Fire Department.
