Recent monitoring of Missouri River bridges illustrates that North Dakota bridges are structurally sound

North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) officials announced today that the recent underwater monitoring of state highway bridges along the Missouri River confirms that the bridges are structurally sound.

The NDDOT has recently added and extended riprap under the Grant Marsh Bridge and Liberty Memorial Bridge in the Bismarck/Mandan area to enhance protection of the structures. The NDDOT is working with the United States Geologic Survey (USGS) to monitor these bridges and other highway bridges located along the Missouri River both north and south of the
Garrison Dam.

"As a precautionary measure, NDDOT requested that USGS perform echo-sounding to determine the elevation of the river channel bottom surrounding the bridge piers during the last
couple of weeks," said Terry Udland NDDOT Bridge Engineer. "The initial monitoring indicates
that the speed of the river moving through the area and water levels are not affecting the performance of the bridge pier foundations."

NDDOT's number one priority is safety, therefore the department will continue to monitor all bridges along the Missouri River throughout the summer.
